UTPL: 35 years of providing quality distance education
Over 29,000 students believe the Distance Learning mode of the Universidad Technical Particular de Loja, allowing university education to all those who cannot afford a college classroom, who seek to obtain a second career or supplement their training to meet the need to update their knowledge.
In Ecuador, as well as several countries in Latin America, access to higher education is difficult for several reasons: vast distances between students and universities for quality, replacement of the studies paid work, family obligations, including others.
Given this reality, UTPL, promoted 35 years ago in Ecuador distance higher education. From September 2, 1976 the university became a pioneer in Latin America to provide education to thousands of people around the country and abroad.
Lujan Gonzalez, deputy director of MAD, said that distance education was created to meet the needs that existed in those years, especially the Magisterial, as they lacked access to higher education in many provinces of our country and then extended to other races.
Something we are proud to have achieved over 35 years, according to Lujan, is to provide access to quality higher education to many sectors of the Ecuadorian people who were historically excluded.
In the last 10 years the student population has rejuvenated UTPL in a meaningful way, “more than 50% of students entering college are at an average age between 18 and 25.We have a very young population that cannot enter the type face for various reasons, “stated the Deputy Director of the MAD.
Open and Distance Modality of UTPL fits the needs of students. To do this, you have the appropriate technological tools, but especially the human capacity for management and teaching of these, so students are not forced to move long distances, thus avoiding unnecessary use of resources.
The university’s academic model focuses its offerings in the European system of credit accumulation and transfer (UTPL-ECTS), educating students in specific skills for their profession, which promotes student mobility and recognition of studies abroad.
The credits are the unit of measurement of student work, implies a certain number of hours of work, which students have the choice of materials to suit your workflow.
Changing the teacher’s presence, by a system of tutorials and learning materials, students are the players in their training, achieving one of the most difficult skills of academia: Learning how to study, and do so continuously. Students require great self-confidence, self discipline, critical, research and perseverance. The only key to success is the constant effort and training to target the most demanding professional.
The use of new technologies is tools that are transforming education. To implement the technology Gonzalez Lucan shortens the distances between the university and its students.
Finally, the Assistant Director explained that the UTPL MAD has 19 undergraduate programs and 8 graduate programs in all areas of knowledge. It also has a network of universities in Ecuador, New York, Madrid and Rome, through which the countrymen have the opportunity to become professional.
