Offered by the Faculties of Law at the Universities of Chile and Heidelberg, with support from the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and the Institute of International Studies at the University of Chile.
Objectives.
The main objective of the program is to provide a comprehensive review of trends in the era of globalization, seen in the field of international law, as well as in areas of trade and international investment and arbitration systems and solving disputes in these fields.
Thus, we will analyze the effect of globalization on sources and subjects of international law. It will also address new developments that have occurred in the field of international economic law, protection of the environment and the responsibility of the State and examine the problems that arise in contemporary international society.
Also, pay special attention to issues related to international trade regulation, with particular emphasis on international trade law, investment law and dispute resolution. In this context, the subject of international arbitration, the World Trade Organization and ICSID are studied in detail.
Program Organization.
The Master’s Programmed in International Law – Investment, Trade and Arbitration-is available to lawyers and graduates of juridical sciences anywhere in the world.
The Master’s Degree in International Law (LL.M.) will be awarded by the Universities of Heidelberg and Chile.
Participants who obtain the Master’s Degree in International Law shall be eligible for doctoral studies at the University of Heidelberg.
The program will last one year. Three terms are offered in Santiago de Chile, at the Heidelberg Center for Latin America. The curriculum also provides for a period of three months for the preparation of the thesis. One last school year, one month duration, will be held in Heidelberg, the Max-Planck Institute and the University of Heidelberg. During this period, participate in two workshops and complete their theses.
In each term held in Santiago, will be offered at least eight classes. In the period of Heidelberg will be two workshops. All courses are mandatory.
The final examination in defense of thesis to the Degree of Master of International Law will take place in Heidelberg. May exceptionally be defending the thesis in Santiago de Chile. The best theses will be published in the form of articles in the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and the Institute of International Studies at the University of Chile.
The courses will be in Spanish or English. Participants also can take free courses in German, if they wish. It provides a series of lectures open to special guests in the framework of the Magister.
